Recent Developments at ISR:
U.S. Supreme Court:On Oct. 29, 2007 Jean-Claude André argued before the U.S. Supreme Court Justices on behalf of petitioners in Ali v. Federal Bureau of Prisons, No. 06-9130, challenging the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit’s rule that the United States is sovereignly immune from suits seeking compensation for the damage to or loss of private property by federal prison guards. Ali is the fourth Supreme Court case in thirteen months in which Ivey, Smith & Ramirez has been lead counsel for the petitioners. In a 7-2 decision announced on March 21, 2007, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Ivey, Smith and Ramirez's clients in Winkelman v. Parma City School District, No. 05-983, a federal special education appeal argued by Mr. Jean-Claude André on February 27, 2007. In a 9-0 decision announced on January 22, 2007, the Court ruled in favor of Ivey, Smith and Ramirez's clients on all three issues presented in Jones v. Bock, No. 05-7058, and Williams v. Overton, No. 05-7142, which Mr. André argued on October 30, 2006.
Patent Office pilot project:August 2, 2007; Ivey, Smith and Ramirez began participation in the "e-Office Action" pilot project of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Former client acquired:January 5, 2007/"Garmin Ltd. announced today that it has acquired location based services provider Digital Cyclone Inc. (DCI) for $45 million in cash. The acquisition is expected to be accretive to Garmin Ltd. earnings in 2007." Patent Attorney Michael Smith wrote the first 5 of DCI's 7 patent applications that were fundamental to DCI.
